An Emerging Actor-Network of Working Musicians in Fells Point, Baltimore

This study applies Latour’s actor-network theory to an ethnographic investigation of three working musicians in Fells Point, Baltimore, Maryland. Field research was conducted during three performances of The Ricky Wise Trio at a single location, The Admiral’s Cup, a bar and grill in the heart of the Fell’s Point neighborhood. The study relies on site observations and semi-structured interviews consistent with ethnographic and ethnomusicological studies of music scenes and performance spaces, and is situated among existing literature concerning creative labor, music scenes, networks, and analytic autoethnography. This literature is placed into conversation with the primary field research, and the conclusion suggests a future, deeper investigation into the broader network of professional musicians revealed through the study.
