Computational Amino Acid Tutorial for Learning: Integrated with Online Network (CATLion)
CATLion is an interactive computational chemistry learning module designed to help students explore amino acid structure and properties through visualization and guided simulations. The platform allows users to analyze features such as polarity, protonation states, molecular geometry, and functional groups using an intuitive graphical user interface. This project was designed to be implemented in conjunction with General, Organic, and Physical Chemistry courses, as it serves to bridge the conceptual gaps students may encounter and can easily be modified, shared, and accessed by instructors. Initial work was shared at ACS national and regional meetings, and the software kernel and mathematical framework were published in "Engaging Students in Physical Chemistry." This poster focuses on evaluating CATLion’s effectiveness as an educational tool in introductory chemistry courses. Survey data and usage feedback were collected to assess student learning, engagement, and usability. Results indicate that CATLion supports conceptual understanding while highlighting areas for improvement in navigation and accessibility.
