Sacred Violence and Symbolic Power: Historical Precedents and Policy Implications for Counterterrorism

This paper investigates the historical phenomenon of sacred violence and its implications for contemporary counterterrorism policy. Through a qualitative comparative case study of Ancient Egypt, Assyria, and the Aztec Empire, the research identifies recurring mechanisms of symbolic terror, including ritualized public violence, divine justification, and the intertwining of religious doctrine with state authority. Drawing upon David Rapoport's Four Waves of Terrorism and Pierre Bourdieu's theory of symbolic violence, the study elucidates the continuities between ancient sacred violence and modern extremist movements. The findings indicate that ideological narratives and performative violence remain pivotal to processes of radicalization, thereby supporting the formulation of culturally informed counterterrorism strategies. These strategies should emphasize historical awareness, theological literacy, symbolic analysis, and prevention frameworks.
