ENT 532 Fall 2024: Earwig
An earwig found in Watertown, NY at a rest stop. This was one of many earwigs found on a picnic table (07/08/2024).
My observations:
11:30pm: A brisk night. It has rained recently as I take notice of my damp surroundings, beads of rainwater collecting on blades of grass. As I walk back to the car from the rest stop, my friend points out the large grouping of earwigs on a nearby wooden picnic table. As I draw closer, I take note of the various-sized earwigs scattered across the table. There must have been a dozen or more. I am bewildered as to why there are so many in one spot. Is the table's wood attracting them? Does the fact that it is damp out contribute? As I attempt to collect one, they all immediately scatter. I drop a few that I try to grab, their slippery body making it hard for me to get a grip. Those that evade my fingers flex their cerci in response. I take note of their defensive attributes. Both a slippery body and a pair of pincers make for well-developed defense and I wonder if they possess other characteristics that aid them in evading predators.
