It’s a curricular issue: An alternative way to think about bullying
We propose an alternative way to think about and approach bullying-addressing it as a curricular issue rather than through add-on programs. We propose using authentic literature, particularly picture books appropriate for middle level students, as a tool to teach Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and engage students in confronting bullying inside rather than outside the curriculum.
We begin by sharing a brief description of lessons learned from a content analysis on the topic of bullying (Bintz & Ciecierski, 2018). Next, we present a rationale for viewing bullying as a curricular issue. Then, we identify way-in texts and highlight a specific CCSS anchor standard for each text. These books are good starting points for developing a curriculum with a focus on addressing bullying. We also connect these way-in texts with findings from our content analysis. We conclude with final thoughts and next steps.
