Make Your Mark: A Signature Project to Bring Together the Penn State Harrisburg Campus Community

Community projects take on a variety of shapes depending on the needs of the community served. The needs of the Penn State Harrisburg community I focused on for my project Make Your Mark were the representation of the individual on the school’s campus and the simultaneous desire to be part of something larger. To address these concerns I designed a project in the shape of a signature coat, which is inspired by the signature quilt tradition where community members would sign their names on quilt squares that were later sewn into one large quilt. Over the span of six months I solicited signatures from staff, students, and faculty that I then sewed together in the shape of a coat that will be given back to the university. As a whole, the signature coat is a physical record of the campus community made exclusively by and for the members of that community.
