This research covers trends in gravestone iconography in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, from the mid-1700s to the late 1800s. The images chosen to be depicted on gravestones change over time as culture, religion, and current events influence society. Gravestone iconography is used to communicate the public's attitude towards death and the afterlife as well as depict how historical events such as the Great Awakening and the Civil War impacted society on an emotional and cultural level.
