THE REVEGETATION OF HIGHlY ACID SPOil BANKS IN THE BITUMINOUS COAl REGION OF PENNSYlVANIA

Special Research Report SR-71 Acid spoil condit~ons constitute a major problem in the revegeta. tion of bituminous coal mine spoil banks in Pennsylvania. Earlier research indicated that tree and shrub species showed more promise than grasses and legumes on these problem areas. With the above in mind, test plots were set out on acid spoil banks resulting from strip mining the Brookville and Lower Kittanning coal seams. The test area is located near Kylertown in Clearfield County.
