Tanks as Cultural Icons

My thesis examines the transformation of the tank from a mere instrument of warfare into a American archetype, symbolizing military might and technological innovation. By analyzing a broad spectrum of cultural representations, including films, video games, and military parades, the study articulates how the tank has become embedded in the American psyche, transcending its physical utility to embody ideals of power, protection, and progress. Through a multidisciplinary approach that intersects history, media studies, and cultural analysis, my research traces the tank's journey into the collective consciousness of the American public, from its introduction in World War I to its iconic status in the 21st century.

Genres explored include the portrayal of tanks in Hollywood cinema and video games like "World of Tanks" and "War Thunder," demonstrating how these media reflect and shape societal perceptions of military technology. My analysis extends to the symbolism of tanks in national parades and political discourse, reinforcing the tank's status as a symbol of national pride and strength.

Drawing on case studies and cultural theory, my study reveals the complex layers of meaning that have accrued around the tank, transforming it into a potent symbol of American identity. I argue that the tank's elevation to an archetype reflects broader narratives of technological supremacy and military valor central to America's self-image. My thesis concludes by reflecting on the implications of this archetypal status for understanding America's relationship with military technology and its impact on national and global cultures of war.
