The Little Things

Every human being who lives a more-than-negligible existence will, at one point or another, experience trauma; it is, unfortunately, a universal sensation of the human condition. While select individuals are granted the fortuity to avoid the physical and emotional pain, discomfort, sorrow, and debilitating anguish that often accompanies direct intercourse with a traumatic occurrence, even they will inevitably be vicariously exposed to traumatic events via interaction with a vast array of mediated communication channels. This inherently-social nature of trauma, in all its acknowledged renditions, has consequently made it prime thematic material for exploitation across essentially every communicative medium dating back through both primitive and civilized global societies. Yet – and despite some notable protestations to the contrary – a sizable majority of academic inquiries have posited the notion that a range of positive – even therapeutic – psychological aftereffects often result from even the most indirect acquaintance with a traumatic occurrence. It is in this progressive spirit that the associated creative production is presented. Utilizing the multifaceted and interdisciplinary processes of representation theorem first articulated by renowned cultural theorist Stuart Hall, as well as, to a lesser extent, Cathy Caruth’s relatively-novel trauma theory, the attendant production, a portion of a feature-length narrative screenplay entitled “The Little Things”, seeks to bring the aforementioned societal implications of traumatic experience to vivid life by relaying the fictional narrative of three young characters who unwittingly participate in a horrific, decidedly-nonfictional catastrophe – the deadly crash of Delta Airlines Flight 191 at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport on the evening of August 2, 1985.
