Social Media Awareness: Knowing the Influence

Social media is an integral part of our daily life and so we are susceptible to falling victim to the negative aspects of social media. One must improve awareness of social media usage to better mitigate these adverse effects. Understanding how users are targeted through personalized algorithms, as well as the science behind them, and gaining a better understanding of how to prevent or address the problems with social media as they arise are vital to maintaining the border between the physical world and the digital world.

    Description
    • "The Dark Side of Social Media" is an informative campaign on campus dedicated to informing those who access social media the most to be more aware of adverse influences. We aim to better educate the most susceptible to such influence, namely young people and college-age students, to be better prepared and more aware. We will accomplish this by helping to educate about how algorithms target the individual, providing more extreme examples of the negatives, and discussing online "echo chambers", their effects, and ways to combat them.
