Science Diplomacy Opportunities in the Ukraine-Russia Conflict 1
Summary: Conflict in all its forms drives the need for policy changes and innovation. While the Ukraine-Russia war is not seen as a conflict involving science or technology issues, science diplomacy efforts could play a significant role in decreasing the local and global effects. This war will have effects on global food security, climate change and sustainability efforts, and nuclear energy and weaponization. Further, on-going conflict will hinder the progress of research and degree progress at colleges and universities, having a negative effect on the next generation of Ukrainian and Russian scientists. Science imbues every aspect of the war’s impacts, and science diplomacy can help to provide solutions. Herein, we examine the various science policy aspects of the Ukraine-Russia war where science could be used as a diplomatic channel to strengthen alliances and advance scientific research and sustainability efforts. Three areas that could benefit from science diplomacy efforts are food policy, nuclear energy policy, and science-related humanitarian issues.
