Agesilaus' Boiotian Campaigns and the Theban Stockade of 378-377 B.C.
Book 5 chapter 4 of Xenophon's Hellenica describes the outbreak of fighting in the so-called Boiotian War. Xenophon describes an innovative field work designed by the Thebans and their Athenian allies to give them a tactical advantage in resisting the superior Peloponnesian forces led by Agesilaus. This article examines the testimonia and the topography of the Theban countryside to reconstruct an understanding of how the campaigns of 378 and 377 proceeded.
