Teen Pregnancy: What American Media Says About It

Almost everyone will no doubt encounter someone who is pregnant at some point in their life. It could be their mom, pregnant with a sibling. An aunt pregnant with a cousin. It could be their wife or partner, and it could very well be themselves. The average age of which women are becoming pregnant is steadily increasing. Subsequently the number of teenage mothers is going down. But it is not at zero. In fact, the United States has the highest rate of teenage pregnancy in the Western world. Movies and televisions are some of the most influential pieces of media. In this thesis I argue that this media plays a large role in how teenage pregnancy is perceived. I do this by analyzing prominent films and shows for their accuracy. I also use the help of journal articles and a book to aid my findings. Movies like Juno (2007) and Gimme Shelter (2014) offer an inside, investigate, look this phenomenon of teenage pregnancy.
