Development of the Transgender and Gender Diverse (TGD) Visibility Management Scale

Lasser and colleagues’ (2010) Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Visibility Management Scale was constructed to assess visibility management (VM), which is defined as the process by which people regulate the extent to which they disclose traits or characteristics that would otherwise not be conspicuous. The concept was originally proposed as a phenomenon observed in lesbian, gay and bisexual youth. Therefore, to extend the theory to transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people, the Transgender and Gender Diverse (TGD) Visibility Management Scale will be developed to study how TGD people negotiate the disclosure of their gender identity in social situations. To obtain the psychometric properties of the scale, around 400 participants 18 years and older who do not identify as cisgender will be recruited. The confirmatory analysis revealed two subscales not unlike but still discrete than the Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Visibility Management Scale. The reliability and validity analyses indicate that the TGD VM Scale is a unique, meaningful, and independent scale with robust psychometric properties. Predictive validity using a known group analysis suggests that the scale is able to distinguish those with higher and lower degrees of proximal minority stress. The scale can, thus, be used for clinical and research applications to better understand the lives and experiences of people in the TGD community.
