Does platelet transfusion threshold in premature infants impact neurodevelopmental outcomes?

Citation: Moore CM, D’Amore A, Fustolo-Gunnink S, Hudson C, Newton A, Santamaria BL, et al. Two-year outcomes following a randomized platelet transfusion trial in preterm infants. Arch Dis Child Fetal Neonatal Ed. 2023;108(5):452–7 [1]. QUESTION: In infants born at less than 34 weeks of gestation with thrombocytopenia, is a higher platelet transfusion threshold of 50 ×109/L, compared to a lower threshold of 25 ×109/L, associated with higher incidence of death or neurodevelopmental impairment (NDI) at 4 months of corrected age (CA)? STUDY CONCLUSION Higher platelet count threshold of 50 × 109/L in infants <34 weeks of gestation at birth is associated with higher odds of death or NDI at 24 months of CA.
