Racial Differences in Legitimacy Assessments: Examining the Effects of Procedural Justice and Utilitarian Assessments of Police
Groundwork: Public perceptions of law enforcement vary in the United States. This project examines procedural justice and instrumental assessments of police by racial group.
Research Questions: 1. Do perceptions of police differ by racial group? 2. What explains racial differences in legitimacy assessments and anticipated cooperation with law enforcement? 3. Are racial differences in attitudes explained by utilitarian assessments or perceptions of procedural justice?
Approach: Mediation regression modeling of a cross-sectional self-report survey collected from 1,093 U.S. residents.
