The Effectiveness of Captain McFinn Explore Kindness Program on Physical Aggression, Relational Aggression, and Prosocial Behavior in Early Childhood
The current study, an extension of a previous project, aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Captain McFinn Explore Kindness Program, which was a comprehensive classroom-based program designed to reduce physical and relational aggression and improve prosocial behavior, empathy, and emotion regulation in early childhood. The primary research question of this study was to examine the effectiveness of Captain McFinn Explore Kindness Program. Results revealed short- and long-term effects of the program on young children’s aggressive behaviors and prosocial skills. Results demonstrated intervention effects, such that children’s prosocial behavior, empathy, and emotion regulation were enhanced, and physical aggression was reduced compared to the children in the control classrooms, both short-term and long-term. Moreover, results showed that children’s relational aggression decreased immediately after participating in the program but did not maintain the effect after three months. The secondary research question examined the mechanism between group condition and changes in children’s prosocial behavior. Results showed that empathy mediated the relationship between group condition and the changes of prosocial behavior in early childhood such that the improvement in empathy induced the improvement in prosocial behavior in the condition group. Implication of early preventive intervention programs targeting empathy on the effect of aggressive and prosocial behaviors will be discussed.
