Round Robin Testing of Austenitic Stainless Steel Powders using a Rotating Drum Rheology Tool
Rotating drum powder rheology tools rely on the dynamic measurement of the avalanche of a metal powder sample to identify important powder rheological properties. In order to evaluate the repeatability of this measurement technique, a series of four blind samples consisting of virgin, recycled, and blended virgin and recycled 316L stainless steel powders specified for powder bed fusion additive manufacturing were tested across three different laboratories using identical procedures. Measurements of the flow, packing, and multi-flow properties of the individual powder samples using the rotating drum system demonstrated the ability to consistently identify differences in the powders and to produce repeatable results with rather low levels of uncertainty. Comparisons of results obtained from testing performed at different laboratories also showed similar results can be obtained.
