A review of the future: A very short introduction
Jennifer M. Gidley’s The Future: A Very Short Introduction (2017, xiv +164 p) is part of Oxford University Press’s “Very Short Introduction” series, which, since 1995, have delivered titles fit for “anyone wanting a stimulating and accessible way into a new subject.” This review will consider whether or not the book is, as advertised, stimulating and accessible to readers, and then hazard a few remarks in conclusion. Our highest praise possible for a text like this: with virtually no room for self-indulgence or tangent, is that Gidley provides a distinctive, personalized perspective of the field that ultimately renders a hopeful view of the future to readers.
