Centre County's Historic Farmsteads: Faunal Data From Penn State Archaeological Field Schools (2006-2009, 2015-2016)
For six summers between 2006-2009 and 2015-2016, Penn State Archaeological Field Schools led by Dr. Claire Milner excavated at the 19th and 20th Century Massey, Scare Pond, and Foster Farmsteads in Centre County Pennsylvania. Faunal material from these excavations was analyzed by Martin H. Welker, volunteer Joanne Hughes, and Penn State undergraduate Margaret McCabe. These datasets provide information on the diet of historic farmers living in Centre County during the mid-19th and early 20th Centuries. The results of these analyses, and related investigation of glass, ceramic, and other material culture recovered from these sites will be presented in an outreach exhibit at the Shaver's Creek Environmental Center. Where possible, these datasets include information on the species identification, degree of burning, cut marks presence/absence, epiphyseal fusion, and skeletal morphometrics.
