Audio narratives from scientific ocean drilling: gathering content for StoryCorps

ABSTRACT -- Our aim is to document the untold stories of those who have sailed on and supported the scientific missions of Glomar Challenger, JOIDES Resolution, the Chikyū, and mission-specific platforms. While the research methods and analyses obtained from deep-sea cores are extensively disseminated for the benefit of scientists and public, a trove of at-sea insights and experiences on the part of scientists, technicians, and crew at sea remains unopened.

Three former Onboard Outreach Officers from JOIDES Resolution are recording one-on-one conversations with those connected to scientific ocean drilling to build a collection of audio narratives. Each of these authentic stories showcases personal as well as professional aspects of science at sea. The recordings are posted in a community section on the StoryCorps website at Tales from the Deep: Stories of Scientific Ocean Drilling (https://archive.storycorps.org/communities/tales-from-the-deep-stories-of-scientific-ocean-drilling/).

At this early stage of project development, we are soliciting feedback to ensure that the collection of content is useful to instructors across grade levels as well as general adult audiences. The goal is for the scientific ocean-drilling community to own and grow this project, with us as facilitators.

In addition to audio transcripts being generated for each file, what else would be beneficial? Perhaps images, maps, and formative/summative assessments? Would suggested listening lists (grouped according to the main theme of the audio conversations) help students to navigate the site? Comments as well as sign-ups for future conversations to be recorded and added to our StoryCorps community are welcome at the poster.
