Betty Parsons Gallery Sales and Purchases, 1946-1981 Part 2

This dataset builds on the work started by Keri Mongelluzzo in 2018, deriving data from the Betty Parsons Gallery Sales and Inventory Records, 1946-1981 held in the Smithsonian Archives of American Art. This dataset includes sales invoices from all artists represented in the files, excluding Ellsworth Kelly, Barnett Newman, Jackson Pollock, and Hedda Sterne, which are covered in the Mongelluzzo dataset. The 3974 objects were recorded in digitized files grouped Sales Invoices by Artist and Sales Invoices by Buyer. These objects were sold by the Betty Parsons Gallery in New York City between 1946 and 1981. By recording sales invoices of artists not included in the Mongelluzzo dataset, this complementary record allows for broader comparisons across materials and buyers, as well as incorporating a range of objects including sculpture. With this new data it is also possible to explore objects which buyers decided to purchase, but then returned or cancelled.
