Cybersecurity Assessment of Non-profit Organizations (NPOs)

Nonprofit organizations (NPOs) play a vital role in promoting community resilience and equity by addressing critical societal needs such as food security, education, and healthcare. With over 1.3 million NPOs operating in the United States and employing approximately 12.3 million people, the sector significantly contributes to both social impact and economic growth. However, the growing threat of cyberattacks poses a substantial risk to their operations. In the past two years, 60% of nonprofits reported experiencing a cyberattack, with the average data breach costing around $200,000—resources that could otherwise support their missions. Despite this, only 20% of NPOs have a formal cyberattack response policy in place. This research explores nonprofit organizations’ perceptions of their current state of cyber readiness, the motivations behind seeking support from the "We Are CyberReady" research team, and the level of internal awareness surrounding cyber threats. The findings aim to inform strategies for strengthening cybersecurity practices across the nonprofit sector.
