The Effectiveness of Creative Art to Reduce Stress and Anxiety in College Students
According to the World Health Organization, stress is one of the largest health problems facing the world today leading to exhaustion, burnout, and health-related conditions (Martin et al., 2018). Stress can occur when an individual finds themselves in a situation that is challenging or threatening, and their coping abilities are insufficient to handle that situation (Lazurus, 1984). Many young adults spend their formative years focused on academic success to gain acceptance to a college or university of choice. Admission into college, however, is merely the beginning of a new academic challenge and not the end. While the university experience comes with exciting new opportunities, young adults may also encounter difficult challenges that they had not anticipated as they enter the world of higher education. Many younger adults may feel unprepared for these challenges causing unanticipated stress and anxiety that has negative consequences on their health and academic experience. The goal of this study is to explore whether creative art sessions are effective in alleviating anxiety for university students.
