Model Reduction of Power Systems with Asynchronous Generators
To meet the increase in load demand and to keep low-carbon footprint, renewable energy-based generating units such as wind farms are being integrated to the modern power system, which are asynchronous generators in nature. Inclusion of these asynchronous generating units brings more complexity to such power system models. To that end, in this paper, multi-input multi-output (MIMO) model order reduction of modern power system models with asynchronous generators using a traditional model reduction technique called Balanced Truncation (BT) and a relatively new interpolatory approach of Iterative Rational Krylov Algorithm (IRKA) are studied. A case study on a 16-machine dynamic equivalent of the New England-New York power system with 2 wind farm models demonstrates that the traditional BT methods suffer, whereas the IRKA shows promising results.
