National Institute of Standards and Technology

The National Bureau of Standards succeeded the Office of Standard Weights and Measures established in 1830 as a section of the Coast Survey.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) operates under the authority of the National Institute of Standards and Technology Act (15 U.S.C. 271), which amends the Organic Act of March 3, 1901 (ch. 872), that created the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) in 1901 (31 Stat. 1449; 15 U.S.C. 171-286). In 1988, Congress renamed NBS as NIST and expanded its activities and responsibilities.
