A COMPUTER SIMUlATION MODEl FOR COAl PREPARATION PLANT DESIGN AND CONTROL

Special Research Report SR-102 In designing a coal preparation plant to produce several end products to meet market specifications, many onerous calculations are required to check all possible operational schemes. In practice many of the calculations are not carried out, but general •rules of thumb• applied with the result that unnecessary yield losses may occur or even the wrong product mix may be made because of insufficient planning. This r~port describes the development of a computer program that is able to simulate the blending of raw coals of different washabilities in any given proportion and produce a synthesized raw coal washability of each size fraction. It further simulates a practical two stage washing operation at a high and low separating gravity by applying suitable distribution curves and imperfections. It checks all possible combinations of size fractions washed at varying separating gravities that will yield final products that meet the desired quality specifi- cations of up to eight quality constraints. Using financial data on sales revenue for each product, the conditions for optimum revenue are arrived at. The final output of the program is: 1. the separating gravities of each size fraction; 2. the predicted yields of each product; 3. the predicted analysis of each product; 4. the revenue from each product; 5. the organic efficiencies and probable errors of each separation, and the overall economic efficiency.
