You are not alone: a poster for international college students
Mental health is related to the emotional, psychological, and social well-being of an individual. It affects the way we act, feel, and think. Mental well-being is crucial for college students to succeed in their academic journey especially for international students. International students face many challenges ranging from language barriers, social and cultural differences, and many others. These barriers and many other experiences such as financial crises, abuses, traumas, and academic stress may negatively affect their mental well-being. These can result in mental health issues such as depression, suicide, anxiety, non-suicidal self-injury, and so on. In this research, I reviewed articles that focus on challenges new international students face, how these challenges play a role in the underlying causes of depression and non-suicidal self-injury, and how the use of art and psychotherapy is beneficial to the mental well-being of international students suffering from these mental health issues. Based on my research, I created a poster for the international student's office at Penn State, Harrisburg. My project shows an art piece that portrays depression and non-suicidal self-injury. The project was done to bring more awareness to the above topic among students at the Penn State campuses. This will show students that they are not alone and should not feel afraid to reach out, seek help, and rediscover themselves.
