Thematic Review of Operational Business Intelligence Approaches: Data Federation and Data Virtualization
This literature review examines the two main approaches in operational business intelligence (OBI) – data federation and data virtualization – and the challenges and solutions associated with each. OBI aims to provide real-time or near-real-time analytics and reporting capabilities to support operational decision-making. Data federation involves the integration of data from multiple sources into a centralized data warehouse for analysis, while data virtualization provides a unified view of data from disparate sources without requiring the creation of a centralized repository. The review includes a comprehensive survey of the literature on both data federation and data virtualization, with a focus on the challenges and solutions associated with each approach. These challenges include data quality issues, data security and privacy concerns, and the need for effective data governance. Solutions to these challenges include the use of data cleansing and profiling tools, the implementation of security protocols and access controls, and the establishment of clear data governance policies and procedures.
