Shakespeare and Astronomy (1995 -- )
This collection shows that Shakespeare is well-versed in the chief cosmological models of his time. The principal authors of these models are Claudius Ptolemy in the second century CE, and in the sixteenth century, Nicholas Copernicus, Tycho Brahe, and Thomas Digges. Shakespeare knew details of the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars that he could not have known without telescopic aid. All these data were later confirmed telescopically beginning with Thomas Harriot and Galileo Galilei in the years 1609-10. Chapter 7 of the book "Shakespeare and the Dawn of Modern Science" suggests how this knowledge might have originated. The works show also that Shakespeare pays close attention to matters of time. Dates in parentheses aid in tracing the genesis and evolution of new interpretations of the canon's scientific content (Scholar Sphere does not enable users to change the order of listed items). The plays analyzed in this collection and their approximate dates of composition are: The Comedy of Errors (1592-4), Love's Labour's Lost (1593-5), The Merchant of Venice (1596-8), Much Ado about Nothing (1598-9), Hamlet (1600-1), All's Well that Ends Well (1603-5), Antony and Cleopatra (1606-7), The Winter's Tale (1609-10), and Cymbeline (1610-11).
