How Is What and What Is How: Research and Writing in an Integrated Biology and Literature Course

Our institution recently incorporated into the general education curriculum a requirement of integrative studies courses that consider topics from two different disciplinary perspectives. For that curriculum, we developed and, for the past four years, have taught a 100-level, three-credit honors course combining biology and literature titled From Beast Books to Resurrecting Dinosaurs (Beasts). Our course offers an opportunity for students (and teachers) to engage the research process through writing: science and its methods provide context and content for writing, while the literature and writing assignments provide context and tools for learning about scientific processes as well as about literary close reading.
