Personalized learning in Medical Education: Lessons learned and a Pathway forward for Laparoscopic Surgical Training
While we are becoming more aware of the importance of novel surgical training methods, an industry preferred system has yet to be developed. Research on different training methods and their effectiveness, specifically as it relates to training novice surgeons has proven beneficial to both increased success rates and decreased time required to learn a task. Furthermore, laparoscopic surgery has been the favorable surgical method for many years, but due to its nature and complexity, it is difficult to develop expertise. This paper was developed to collect and analyze feedback from both novice and expert surgeons to work to develop a state-of-the-art laparoscopic surgery training system. In order to accomplish this, a 2-part study was created to: (1) systematically collect and analyze feedback on current methods by experienced professionals to identify the items necessary for a personalized learning system and (2) develop and experimentally test the usability of the personalized learning interface and prototype. This paper covers part (1) of the study. These results can be used to support and develop personalized learning systems within the medical community.
