Environmental Research Laboratories (1971- )

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration was established within the Department of Commerce on October 3, 1970 by Reorganization Plan 4 of 1970 (5 U.S.C. app.). See Federal Register of Feb. 13, 1978, 43 FR 6128. The research laboratories were pulled together under the umbrella of the Environmental Research Laboratories (ERL), with headquarters in Boulder, Colorado. NOAA reorganized in 1977 to include five principal offices: Office of Fisheries, Office of Coastal Zone Management, Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Services, and Office of Research and Development. The Office of Research and Development was responsible for environmental research. The Office of Research and Development was renamed the Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (C 55.700) in 1983.
