Reflecting Diversity in the Library of Congress Subject Headings

21st century libraries serve a diverse clientele. The Library of Congress Subject Headings, however, do not reflect this diversity. Too often, subject headings fail to describe library users in the way they describe themselves, making the library look out of touch at best, and offensive at worst. Although some changes have been made to Library of Congress Subject Headings, work remains to be done, or libraries risk alienating patrons. This chapter will examine some of the problems remaining in the Library of Congress Subject Headings, discuss potential impacts on library users, and propose solutions.
