D&D Academy: A Tabletop Roleplaying Game Workshop Series for Undergraduate Students
During the Fall semester of 2023, the Penn State Scranton campus library hosted a series of workshops and gatherings for undergraduate students interested in learning how to play Dungeons & Dragons. The D&D Academy was designed to facilitate student engagement that encourages creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. Students of all experience levels came together, many of whom did not previously know one another, to share in this common interest and learn how to play a game that they can continue to enjoy throughout their college experience and beyond. The program began with two workshops that taught students how to build characters and how to lead the game as dungeon masters. A brief beginner campaign followed in which students embarked on a cooperative adventure filled with immersive roleplay, strategical combat, and enigmatic puzzles. The program concluded with a graduation party to celebrate the accomplishments of all those that participated. This poster presentation will detail the conception, planning, marketing, hosting, and assessment of the D&D Academy while also highlighting its challenges and successes.
Presented at the American Library Association 2024 Conference and Exhibition on June 29, 2024.
