Effectiveness of The Mentor Project on Adolescents’ Protective and At-Risk Factors
Mentoring has been shown to positively impact students’ academic and social development. However, mentoring programs may vary in format (e.g., one-on-one versus group) and context (e.g., community versus school). There is a paucity of research that has examined the effect of mentor programs that combines both the school, as well as the community context. The purpose of the current study is to observe the effectiveness of a school-based mentoring program (including community members) on adolescents’ protective and at-risk factors. The protective factors surveyed included social connectedness, well-being, and hope, while the at-risk factors included peer and relational victimization. This study examined three research questions; (1) What is the effect of a mentor program on adolescents’ protective and at-risk factors? (2) Does a mentee’s gender affect the effectiveness of the mentor program? (3) How effective are mentor programs for at-risk versus typical adolescents? At-risk adolescents were defined by the presence of a physical disability. Data were collected using a pre- and post-test design. The outcomes of the study indicated that The Mentor Project treatment had some positive trends regarding increasing protective factors in at-risk adolescents and being non-biased to the binary genders (male and female). However, the program’s limitations should be reviewed to better improve the overall effectiveness of The Mentor Project intervention. This research supports the use of mentoring interventions as a resource for adolescent aged mentees, and also encourages the need for further research in group mentoring for school-based programs.
