Digital Hangouts: The Rise of “Virtual Third Places” on the Internet and Their Impact on Adolescent Psychological Well-Being
Since their explosion into society, social networking sites (SNSs) and Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs) have become informal social hubs for adolescents. This project examines their impact on adolescent psychological well-being and social development, exploring virtual third places that were once physical spaces like coffee shops and are now digital environments like SNSs & MMOGs. Using survey data, self-reports, meta-analyses, and observational studies, it assesses both the benefits of connectivity and the risks of digital overuse.
