Punitive Attitudes Toward Sex Offenders: Does Offender Sex Matter?

Background: Prior research has found offender sex to influence sentencing outcomes for individuals convicted of sex offenses (ICSO). Specifically, female sex offenders have been found to receive less punitive sanctions than their male counterparts. Research also suggests that members of the public place more stigma on male ICSOs than on female ICSOs.

Research Question: Do variations in sex of perpetrator or victim influence punitive attitudes toward ICSO?

Approach: Factorial experiment using a vignette survey to collect pilot data from 117 college students.
