Media Exposure vs. Lived Experience with Police: What Influences Attitudes?

Groundwork: In the U.S., police interactions with the public have gained media attention. Prior research has shown that TV news consumption and experiences with police alter public perceptions of police.1 However, there is little empirical research on the relationship between categories of news, experiences with police, and public perceptions of police.

Research Questions: Are public perceptions of police impacted more by contact with police, knowledge of policing events, or news media consumption habits?

Approach: Multiple regression analysis of survey data collected from a cross-sectional, nation-wide sample of 1,093 Americans.
