Art and Physical and Psychological Healing

Stress and illness are connected, and many cultures recognized this and used art to improve physical healing. Studies on art and art therapy's use in mental healing exist, however there are fewer on the physical effects of art therapy. Researchers have done qualitative and quantitative studies on how art benefits patients. I analyzed multiple peer-reviewed studies that contained both theoretical information on the use of art in healing and practical application of art for patients. It is supported by a variety of research that the use of art and/or art therapy can promote both mental and physical healing in a variety of medical settings and for many ills or injuries. The positive effects of art therapy were found to occur regardless of gender, age, illness, sex, or type of care that the patient was receiving. This influenced my own project, to make simple coloring pages inspired by nature, like some used in the studies with patients. Ideally, the use of these coloring pages in medical settings will help to lessen both mental and physical symptoms of stress for their users. I found in my research that, increased stress can severely reduce chances of recovering from or even surviving illness and injury. If the use of something as simple as coloring pages can reduce life-altering stress, then it is critical to use art to help potentially save patients’ lives.
