Chapter Six - Before the Magna Mater: The Mother of the Gods and Empire

The Mother of the Gods, also known as Cybele or the Magna Mater to the Romans, represented sovereign power in Anatolia. Her cult was brought to Athens at the point in the Peloponnesian War when the Athenians expected to establish shared sovereignty with Persia over their Greek subject-allies in Asia Minor.
