Effect of Music Therapy During Low-Impact, Kinesthetic-Based Activity Relating to Mental Wellness and Mood

Certain types of music may affect the limbic system and dopamine production in the body (Fink). Exercise has also proven to increase the production of dopamine as well. The combination of performing low-intensity, kinesthetic activities such as yoga while listening to music has been shown to enhance those effects on the body and yield an increase in overall mood and mental wellness. In our study, we aimed to distinguish that music positively affects the body during exercise rather than when exercising without music. By participating in multiple group yoga sessions throughout the semester with and without music, our group concluded that our yoga practice in combination with music therapy was more effective in enjoyment and overall performance than without music therapy. We used a self-report method, using a journaling sheet to record our feelings and attitudes towards life and our yoga sessions, which helped us conclude the results of our study.
