
Rape Myth Acceptance: Does Endorsement Influence Sentencing Decisions?
Groundwork: Rape Myth Acceptance (RMA) is prevalent in society and embedded in the criminal justice (CJ) system.1,2,3,5,7,9 RMA stigmatizes survivors and favors perpetrators.5,7 This leads to negatively influenced case outcomes. Prior research on RMA prevalence in criminal justice professionals is limited.
Research Questions: Are criminal justice professionals more likely to accept rape myths compared to the general public? Does RMA influence punitivity? (e.g., in simulated sentencing decisions)
Approach: A vignette study embedded in a survey of 1,093 U.S. adults, including criminal justice professionals.
