Simulation Education: Preparing Critical Access Hospital Emergency Staff to Manage Postpartum Hemorrhage
This DNP project implemented a postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) self-learning module and simulation exercises to evaluate the change in emergency department personnel in their knowledge, self-confidence, and team competency to recognize and manage postpartum hemorrhage. The uniqueness of this project was the site of implementation. The PPH was implemented in a critical access hospital of a rural community that did not have an obstetric unit so onsite obstetric expertise was not available. Women with obstetric emergencies presenting to this hospital must be cared for and stabilized in the emergency department prior to their transfer to the nearest obstetric unit which is 30 - 45 minutes away.
