
Perceptions of Police in Pennsylvania: What Mediates Cooperation and Compliance?
Background: Scholars have found racial differences in perceptions of police legitimacy and police performance,1,2,5,6 as well attitudes toward compliance and willingness to cooperate with police officers.6,9 This study seeks to integrate prior research by assessing whether perceptions of police performance and perceived legitimacy mediate the relationship between race and compliance/cooperation.
Research Questions: Are there racial differences in perceptions of police, attitudes toward compliance, and willingness to cooperate with police? Do perceived performance and legitimacy mediate the relationship between race and compliance/cooperation with police?
Approach: Analysis of self-report data from a cross-sectional survey of 522 Pennsylvania residents.
