The Phrygian Inscription W-03 on the Arslan Kaya Monument
The Arslan Kaya monument, a facade carved on a natural rock outcrop in the Phrygian highlands, has been known for its unique image (now badly defaced, of a goddess standing between lions in the doorway niche of the facade. A badly worn Phrygian inscription over the niche has been noticed, but little effort has been made to read what may be still legible. Favorable lighting has confirmed letter traces, which, together with a photographic record over the past century, has enabled the reading of the name, MATERAN, of the Phrygian Mother on this monument, where stylistic details indicate a date in the first half of the sixth century BCE.
