
The integration of lidar and legacy datasets provides improved explanations for the spatial patterning of shell rings in the American Southeast
Analyses of LiDAR data using automated feature extraction algorithms have successfully led to the potential identification of 50 new pre-European contact Native American shell ring deposits in Beaufort County, SC. Here, we use these new findings to conduct a series of point pattern analyses using spatial models designed to assess the relations of rings to factors that may have contributed to deposit locations. We find that ring deposits are highly clustered and best explained through a combination of environmental conditions that include distance to water and elevation, there are likely additional social factors at play that shaped the ring construction and landscape placement that will require further investigations. This dataset provides necessary information to replicate the procedures discussed in the manuscript.
