Performance Modeling of Crossdocking Operations

Cross-docking plays an important role in rapidly moving goods in supply network by minimizing storage time through tightly synchronized operations. This paper investigates performance of an industrial cross-dock by developing analytical and discrete-event simulation models of its operations. A series of G/G/m models based on queuing theory are developed and their parameters are estimated based on data from operations. This analytical model is used to estimate steady-state waiting times and resource utilizations. A higher-fidelity discrete-event simulation model is developed using SIMIO software. The findings from the different simulation scenarios are examined through computational experiments
