ENT 532 (2024): Scarabaeidae

Three scarab beetles were observed gathered near a patch of grass at the edge of a field, their robust, glossy bodies gleaming under the late afternoon sun. The trio appeared to be engaging in some sort of interaction: two beetles pushed and nudged each other, their legs locked briefly in what seemed like a struggle, while the third beetle moved in circles around them. This interactive behavior suggested competition, possibly over a resource hidden beneath the soil, such as dung or decaying organic matter. The two wrestling beetles exhibited strength, using their spade-like legs to attempt to shove the other away. Despite the apparent conflict, their movements were measured, almost ritualistic, as if governed by an unspoken set of rules.
